The vocal is tracked, note by note
A pitch tracker produces a continuous pitch curve and segments it into notes, against the key and tempo the analysis already established. Everything downstream edits that curve, so the correction is something you can inspect — not just a setting you turn up.

Correction is applied with a strength and a speed
How far a note moves toward the target is one control; how quickly it gets there is another. The second one separates transparent tuning from the sound people mean when they say a vocal 'sounds tuned'. An instant retune quantises the pitch transitions, and the transitions carry most of the expression.

Timing is aligned to the grid you name
Onsets are aligned to the tempo map or to a reference vocal, by moving the note rather than time-stretching everything around it. Doubles can be aligned to a lead take instead of the grid — usually what a double is for anyway.

Tone is cleaned last
Sibilance, plosives and the resonances a close microphone adds are treated after pitch and timing, using the restoration stack. Do it in the other order and you're de-essing a signal that's about to be resynthesised.
The specifics
What you would ask before trusting it with a record
Formats, limits, and the places it is honestly hardest. Nothing here is a range we have not measured.
- Pitch tracking
- A learned pitch tracker with note segmentation, evaluated for cent-accuracy against an annotated corpus. The curve comes back with the result and is editable per note, so an intentional bend isn't something you have to fight the default over.
- Resynthesis
- Formant-preserving resynthesis, so shifting a note doesn't shift the singer's apparent size with it. Formant shift is there as its own control, for when that's the effect you want.
- Scale and key
- Correction targets a scale you set, the key the analysis detected, or a chord track. A tuner locked to a chromatic scale will happily move a blue note to the nearest semitone and call it correct.
- Strength bounds
- Maximum correction strength is bounded by what the resynthesis holds up under. Strong correction on a badly-tracked take is where artefacts come from, and we won't ship a control that reliably produces them.
- Naming
- This is pitch correction and vocal tuning — an AI vocal tuner, if that's the phrase you searched for. It's not Auto-Tune, or autotune; that's Antares' product and their trademark, and we use the generic terms because they're the accurate ones.
Questions
What people actually ask
- Will it sound obviously tuned?
- Only if you ask it to. Retune speed is the control that decides: fast retune is the recognisable effect, slow retune is the transparent correction. The default is slow — the default should be the version most people want.
- Can it tune a vocal that is still in the mix?
- Better than it used to be, because separation can extract the vocal first — but a vocal tuned after extraction and re-summed isn't the same as tuning the original take. If you have the multitrack, use it.
- What about harmonies and doubles?
- Each is tracked on its own. Doubles aligned to a lead rather than to the grid keep the small differences that make a double sound like two people — grid-aligning them removes exactly that.
- Does it fix a bad take?
- It fixes pitch and timing. Phrasing, tone and conviction are the take, and no correction stage has anything to say about them. The best use of a tuner is on a performance that was already right.
