Mastering hip-hop: the 808, the knock and the level

What mastering does for a hip-hop record: making the 808 translate to small speakers, keeping drums hitting through the limiter, and what loud means now.

What the genre asks of a master

A hip-hop master succeeds or fails on three things: whether the 808 is still there on a phone speaker, whether the drums still hit after the limiter has done its work, and whether the vocal rides on top without turning harsh. Everything a mastering chain does for this genre — the tonal decisions, the dynamics decisions, the loudness decision — is in service of those three, and the general process is the same six steps as any other master. What differs is where the risk is, and in hip-hop the risk is concentrated at the bottom of the spectrum and the front of every drum hit.

It is also a genre where the line between mixing and mastering is blurrier than usual, because so much of it is produced and mixed by the same person in the same session. That is worth naming up front: several of the problems below are genuinely mix problems that arrive at the master, and which stage owns which problem decides whether they are fixable at all.

The 808 and the small speaker

The 808’s fundamental lives low enough that the speakers most music is actually heard on — phones, laptops, cheap earbuds — physically cannot reproduce it. What makes a bassline audible on those speakers is not its fundamental but its harmonics: the ear reconstructs a pitch from the overtone series even when the fundamental is missing, which is why a bassline with some saturation on it survives on a phone while a pure sine 808 simply disappears.

Mastering cannot re-synthesise a bass part, but it can decide how much of the harmonic content that is already there gets through. Gentle harmonic enhancement on the low band, or simply not equalising away the low-mids where those harmonics live, is often the difference between a track that translates and one whose entire foundation is inaudible outside the studio. The check is simple and worth doing every time: play the master on the smallest speaker you own and listen for the bassline’s pitch, not its weight. If you cannot tell what notes it is playing, the mix’s low end is not done — and that is usually a mix problem before it is a mastering one.

Mono at the bottom

The other low-end decision is mono. Sub frequencies spread wide feel large on headphones and fall apart on any system that sums the channels, which club systems and many phone speakers do. Keeping the low band mono is standard practice for a reason, and it costs nothing audible where the ear cannot localise those frequencies anyway.

It is also measurable rather than a matter of faith. A per-band correlation reading shows whether the bottom two octaves are actually correlated between the channels, and what disappears when the mix is folded to mono — which is the version a lot of the audience gets. The average spectrum answers the companion question: whether there is any harmonic content above the fundamental for a small speaker to find.

The kick and the 808 want the same space

This is the defining low-end problem of the genre and it is almost always upstream of mastering, but it is what a mastering engineer hears first, so it is worth understanding from both ends.

A kick drum and an 808 occupy overlapping territory, often within an octave of each other, and frequently at the same instant because the 808 is triggered on the kick. Two sounds that low, at the same time, sum into something whose level depends on their phase relationship — sometimes reinforcing, sometimes partially cancelling, note by note as the 808 changes pitch. The result is a low end that is inconsistent across the track in a way no mastering EQ can fix, because the problem is not a frequency, it is a collision.

  • Separate them in time or in frequency. Either the kick ducks the 808 for a few tens of milliseconds, or the two live in different bands — a short, high-mid kick over a sustained sub is the arrangement that mixes itself.
  • Check the phase relationship on the notes that matter. If one note of the 808 line is noticeably weaker than its neighbours, the cancellation is doing it, not the sample.
  • Tune the 808 to the key. An 808 a quarter-tone off will beat against everything harmonic in the track, and at that frequency the beating reads as an unsteady level rather than as being out of tune.

What mastering can do is manage the band’s overall level and consistency — multiband dynamics on the low band evens out the note-to-note variation. What it cannot do is un-collide two sources inside a stereo file. If the low end is genuinely fighting and only the bounce survives, separating it back into parts is the one route to treating them independently, with the costs that carries.

Keeping the knock through the limiter

The knock — the way the kick and snare land — lives in transients, the first few milliseconds of each hit. Loudness processing is the enemy of transients by construction: a limiter makes a track louder precisely by shaving the peaks, and the peaks are the drums. Push a hip-hop master hard enough and the level goes up while the hit goes away, which is the characteristic sound of a record that is loud and does not slap.

The honest trade is measured in crest factor — the distance between the peaks and the average level. Preserve enough of it and the drums keep their attack; spend all of it on loudness and the track becomes a flat, loud surface. Where the line sits is a judgement about the material, but it is a judgement you can hear being made: compare the master against the source level-matched, so louder cannot masquerade as better, and listen to the front of the snare. If the comparison is not level-matched, the louder version will win every time for reasons that have nothing to do with quality.

Where the gain reduction should be happening

Watch which hits are being caught. A limiter working evenly across the track is doing its job; a limiter reducing six or eight decibels every time the kick lands is being asked to fix a balance problem, and it will do so by removing the kick. That is a signal to go back and lower the kick rather than to reach for a different limiter.

Sample-based records arrive with baggage

A sampled loop is not raw material. It has already been mixed, compressed, equalised, probably mastered, and quite possibly transferred from vinyl — so it arrives with its own noise floor, its own limiting, and its own tonal decisions baked in, made by someone solving a different problem in a different decade.

  • Surface noise and hiss from a vinyl or tape source ride under the whole track, and a limiter raises them along with everything else. Treating that on the sample, before it is part of the arrangement, does far less damage than trying to reduce it in the finished stereo mix.
  • Already-limited material has no headroom left to give you. Stacking your limiter on top of the one that was applied in 1974 is the double-processing that makes sample-based records sound brittle.
  • The sample’s own low end collides with the drums you added, usually badly. High-passing the loop hard and letting your own kick and 808 own the bottom is the conventional answer, and it is conventional because it works.
  • Mono-era sources are genuinely mono, and widening them artificially causes exactly the fold-down problems the low-end section describes.

None of this is a rights position — it is engineering. Whether you are entitled to use the sample at all is a separate question, and separating something out of a record creates no rights in what comes back.

The vocal on top

Hip-hop mixes carry the vocal further forward than almost any other genre, which means the master’s tonal moves hit the vocal first. A broad presence lift that would flatter an instrumental pushes a forward vocal into harshness; sibilance that was acceptable in the mix becomes fatiguing once the master brings the whole track up. The mastering-stage tools are broad-stroke by design — if the vocal itself is wrong, that is a mix decision — but a master should be judged with the vocal as the reference point, because that is what the listener is tracking.

Stacked ad-libs and doubles are the genre’s other vocal characteristic, and they concentrate energy in the same narrow band every time they appear. A master that sounds controlled through the verse can turn harsh the moment four vocal layers land together, which is a good argument for hearing the loudest section before setting anything.

What loud means after normalisation

Hip-hop’s loudness culture predates streaming normalisation, and normalisation quietly ended the part of it that happened in mastering. Every major platform turns a hot master down to its own playback target, so the extra loudness is removed at the door and what remains is what it cost: the transients, the dynamics, the knock. The number that does deserve strictness in a bass-heavy genre is true peak. Dense low end pushes lossy encoders hard, and inter-sample peaks that clear your DAW’s meter can clip in the platform’s encode. Measure it — the free checker reads true peak on the same standard the platforms use — and keep it under the ceiling. If the low end is already distorting rather than merely peaking, the clipping detector will say so, and it is built not to flag a clean 808 as damage.

The questions people actually ask

What LUFS should a hip-hop track be?

Whatever it measures once it sounds right. Records in the genre commonly land louder than the streaming targets, and every one of them gets turned back down to the same place. The number worth being strict about is true peak, not integrated loudness. The Spotify page works through why the target is a readout rather than a destination.

Why does my 808 disappear on my phone?

Because the phone cannot reproduce its fundamental and the 808 has too little harmonic content above it for the ear to reconstruct the pitch. Saturation on the low band is the usual fix, and it belongs in the mix rather than the master.

Should the 808 be mono?

Below roughly 100 Hz, yes, in almost every case. The ear cannot localise those frequencies anyway, and a wide sub is what collapses on club systems and phone speakers.

Why does my master sound quiet next to a commercial track?

After normalisation it is not quieter — it has less impact. What reads as loud at a matched level is crest factor and low-end weight, not integrated loudness. If the commercial reference feels bigger at the same measured level, it has more transient left, which is a limiting decision rather than a level one.

Does the engine have a trap preset?

No, and the next section is why.

How the engine approaches it
